Description

This online course focuses on best practices in the art and science of devise-based bronchial hygiene care of patients with pulmonary disease who are at risk for deterioration due to retained secretions from their disease.

Target Audience:

Respiratory Therapists, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses and other allied health professionals who will benefit from this knowledge.

Term of Approval: January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2012

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the rationale for why devices should be used to assist with the airway clearance needs of your patients vs. traditional chest physiotherapy alone.
  • Identify the categories of disease or conditions that may present the need for airway clearance therapy.
  • Define what types of airway clearance devices exist.
  • State how to choose which device to use.
  • Demonstrate the use of the most popular devices: Positive expiratory pressure (PEP), Oscillatory positive expiratory pressure (OPEP), and High frequency chest wall compression (HFCWC) devices.
  • List key points that are important in the care of patients requiring airway clearance assistance.
  • Please note that you must obtain a score of 80% or higher on the post test for this activity in order to receive credit.
